CrossFit and Pottery Malcolm Gladwell writes in his book Outliers about a class that was divided into two groups.  One group of students  were given one chance to make one great pot, with a semester’s worth of planning time.   The other group was asked to make as many pots as possible.  The second group ended up making the best pot.  By far.

What’s the takeaway?  When learning new movements, lots of our athletes get caught up thinking too much.  We say lift and nothing happens, because the athlete is so concerned with getting EVERYTHING perfect.   But often, a bad rep can give focus on what needs to be corrected.

So, for every movement, get your starting stance down, focus on one or two performance cues (“tight core, weight back) and go.  The bar will give you feedback, as will a coach.  If you don’t know how it went, try it again, and FEEL it.  Let your body, and the weight teach you how to move safely and efficiently.

And if you don’t know what that means, try another rep.
